Muscles contract under instruction from the nervous system. Messages are passed from nerves to muscles through a ‘neurotransmitter’ called Acetylcholine (‘ACh’). Neurotoxins temporarily block the effect of ACh, effectively rendering the muscle paralysed. Over time (3-4 months on average), your body will produce more ACh, allowing the muscle to start moving again.
